Chucho Valdes - Tribute to Irakere at Jazz A Vienne

At the age of 73, Cuban giant Chucho Valdés, accompanied by the Afro Cuban Messengers, presents his “Tribute to Irakere”, which is both a band and a musical movement that he launched at the beginning of the 1970s. Once again Valdés has placed himself at the very crossroads of jazz, Cuban music and African rhythms. Vigorous and exciting.

From the beginning of the 1970s and the creation of the Irakere band, he has proven to be an innovative bandleader, as famous for his breathtaking solos as for the sophistication of his Latin fusion music. Having just released Border Free (his 35th album) as a tribute to his father, this gentle godfather of Latin jazz returns to the Théâtre Antique to pay exceptional homage to the modernism of Irakere. The pianist and composer leads an incandescent blend of oriental conga, bata drums, rituals from Cuban Santeria, funky jazz, Ellington swing and classical music.
