Healty body & Mind

« Mens sana in corporesano », a healthy mind in a healthy body. This maxim dates from the first century after Christ. The idea of marriage of body and soul, and Church and society seem to have been forgotten for many centuries - at least until Pope John Paul II reminded us that the practice of sports is "the most beautiful activity that we have been given - to live on earth." In France, some priests have thus pulled on their sneakers, like others might pick up a pilgrim’s staff: Jacky the marathon runner, Pascal the weightlifter, Bruno the soccer referee, or Simon the rugby-man and his team of seminarians. They are of course priests, but also high-level...

Maggy, peace is my only battle

An extraordinary adventure is being played out in Burundi in the heart of Africa. It’s the story of a 57 year-old woman, Marguerite Barankitse, also known as Maggy. She’s a Tutsi, but in her country, Tutsis and Hutus slaughter each other. On Sunday, October 24 1993, armed assailants attack the bishop’s palace in Ruyigi province. Maggy tries to intervene, but they beat her, tie her to a chair and set the place on fire and in the courtyard, before her very eyes, they murder 72 people. She manages to untie herself and, by giving the attackers money, she saves 25 children from the slaughter. From her earliest childhood, through her religious education,...

The Rule: Time and the Benedictine Rule

“Kill time, be generous with one’s time, have no time, take one’s time, waste time”: even though these expressions are part of our everyday lives, time poses three of the most basic questions on the meaning of our lives: why, how and when? What can the Benedictine rule bring us by taming time? How can we make it an ally, a tool to be used? How do we halt this inexorable march towards death, the symbol of our finiteness? How do we distinguish the moment, time and eternity? How do we decide between the eternal instant and the moment that crushes us, crumbles us, scatters and encloses us? How do we rise above the concerns of the moment? How do we seize the...

PERIPHERIES

THE GREAT INTERVIEWS - LUCIENNE SALLÉ

There are singular paths, which, through equal amounts of force and discretion – are dug deeper through struggle, marking history and society over time. They leave an enduring foot print for the present and future, widen our outlooks, and show us which paths to follow. These are unexpected and unusual destinies forged by heroes or heroines. They are discreet, and thus it seems all the more necessary and exciting to paint a portrait and narrative, to collect testimony and memories... Lucienne Salle, the so called "Woman of the Vatican" is indeed one of these figures.
