The Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, under the baton of Tugan Sohkiev, performs works by Leoš Janáček, Bohuslav Martinů and Serguei Rachmaninoff in a journey around an Eastern Europe in full musical bloom. The concert opens with Janáček’s Sinfonietta, known as “the military” in homage to the Czech army, a work in five movements where the brass is especially prominent.
Antoine Tamestit then joins the orchestra to perform Martinů’s “Rhapsody-Concerto” for viola with its reflection of bohemian themes. Winner of many awards, this French artist demonstrates his interest in the contemporary repertoire, in particular in this work, which leaves the soloist freedom to display his virtuosity.
Finally, the program closes with Rachmaninoff’s “Symphony no2”, lively and romantic, swinging between tragedy and frenzy, filled with wrenching moments to move to a radiant climax.
