From the sky Saint-Vaast is seen to be largely surrounded by the sea, with its beachhead the Ile de Tatihou and its fortress, a reminder of a dark page in history: the battle of La Hougue when the French fleet was almost annihilated by the English.
Further on, the Gatteville lighthouse was built to prevent the constant shipwrecks in the Barfleur race. It is designed as a calendar: the staircase has 365 steps, 12 landings and 52 windows, one for each week of the year.
Further to the west, Cherbourg appears, sheltered by the biggest artificial harbour in the world… another curiosity.
