It’s a territory that is surrounded by water which the Celts baptised “Olona”, a likely translation of “above the water”. What could be more natural than to look down on this port, which is amongst the most sheltered on the Vendée coast, from the sky. A particular feature: an embankment designed to resist the ravages of the sea. The dike runs up to the channel from where contestants in the Vendée Globe set off for their single-handed race.
Barely visible from the mainland, the Ile d’Yeu is the furthest out on the Atlantic shore. The old castle is difficult to pick out, so well does it blend into the rock. Fans of comic books will no doubt be aware that this obscure fortress served as the background for one of Tintin’s adventures…
The Ile of Noirmoutier is close to the shore, but also close to drowning. Two thirds of the island lie below sea level. It’s hard to fly over the island without a detour over the Gois. First of stone, then paved, for a long time the road beneath the sea was the only means of reaching Noirmoutier. But take care! The causeway only appears one or two hours a day, twice a day, when the tide decides…
