When Nice was built it was Italian. It has kept that charm intact, an unrivalled view of the Mercantour massif to one side and a choice panorama over the mythical Promenade des Anglais to the other.
When they arrive on the Côte d’Azur, the passengers from the cruise ships join the parade and feast their eyes. From the “Baie des Anges” marina and its 1,500 apartments to the airport constructed entirely over the sea, they flirt with excess! The hills behind Nice serve as a setting for mediaeval villages such as Saint Paul de Vence, made famous by the film stars who made it their haunt during the Cannes Festival. Perched 760 metres over the void, the village of Gourdon deserves its nickname of the “Eagles Nest”.
What attracts the cruise ships to the Riviera are the luxury villas built on the very edge of the coast. Residences belonging to the great fortunes of this world. For a few Euros, ferries will show them to the tourists. The visit can sometimes prove its weight in gold. It can produce a report as exciting as any People magazine. You have been warned!
