For French amateur anglers wishing to catch very large saltwater fish, it’s no longer necessary to head for tropical destinations in search of a big trophy. For a considerable time now in the Mediterranean, and more recently in the Atlantic, they have been fishing for red tuna!
Cédric Graciet is a fishing guide off the Basque coast. For several years now, he eagerly awaits the opening of the red tuna fishing season, in which he always participates with his friends and then accompanies clients throughout the season. Clients like Didier and his daughter, Laura, looking to hunt these incredible migratory, fighting, alert and increasingly large fish.
In fact, thanks to the combined efforts of the CICTA (International Commission for the Preservation of Atlantic Tuna), which set up a quota system, and the IFREMER (French Research Institute for Ocean Exploration), which carries out monitoring programs by using tagging and aerial counting, the red tuna population is returning in numbers, in size and coming closer and closer to both the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts.
From scientists engaged in a tagging expedition, with Cédric as our guide, we learn more about the behavior of tuna and fishing it for sport, with the added spice of a challenge that Cédric set himself this year: to catch a record tuna from a float tube!
