Franconia is a small and little-known enclave of vineyards located in the heart of the German region of Bavaria, famous for its fields of hops and many breweries. Planted in Roman times on the sunniest slopes, Franconia’s vineyards grow here on particularly steep terrains and produce a powerful and mineral white wine.
Today, these vines are threatened by the effects of climate change. Erosion and drought jeopardize the unique character of the Franconian grape varieties. Winegrowers and scientists are mobilizing to safeguard this singular wine heritage.
