To the west of Sicily lies the archipelago of the Egades one of whose islands holds a prison. Over a long period the Italian penitentiary department chose to locate its prisons on islands. In Sardinia the prison on the island of Asinara was for a long time the home of Sicilian Mafiosi and Red Brigade terrorists. Today these prisons are highly prized destinations for tourists in search of escape.
