Images of a sardine fishing boat casting its nets into the open sea are astonishing, but they make sense when the crew is tossing back a catch that it deems insufficient. They were filmed off the coast of the Glénan islands, which, it is said, are a glimpse of Tahiti, such is the resemblance of its lagoons to the Polynesian atoll. To the west of Concarneau, at the end of the afternoon, fleets of trawlers sail home to the port of Guilvinec. An impressive crowd is there to greet them. You have to admit the sight is worth its weight in fresh fish. But Guilvinec is an exception. Other ports along the Coast of Cornwall have hung up their nets. As is the case of Bénodet, who now casts his lines towards tourists. Along the banks of the Odet, the river that marks the border of the Bigouden country, the chateaux and other fine houses are of a rare splendour.
In Concarneau, the fishermen haven’t let go. However, the city is backing other activities, such as shipbuilding to keep businesses afloat. Not to forget that with its enclosed town rooted to its rocky island, Concarneau is also trawling for tourists.
