“Polynesia Premier”, as part of the “Heart of the Island” documentary series, invites you to discover the Fenua islands through the eyes of their inhabitants. The first episode of this series will take you to Rurutu, in the Southern lands. Does Rurutu live in between two worlds because of its history? 620 miles away from Rurutu, is the Mac Donald, an under-water volcano that pushed the island out of the water twice. The old coral reef turned into cliffs and grottos: a geological curiosity that attracts more and more tourists. At the same time, its inhabitants try to bring together both their strong oral tradition and the writing society, which regulates trades. Taria Walker is the only writer of the island to have attempted a first work of transmission of memory.
Yves Gentilhomme, a former legionnaire, became Rurutu. With his wife Hélène, he continues to keep this heritage alive through their activity and their pension.
